Orlando City finishes the job against New England

Orlando City’s woes in Central Florida were forgotten for a 90-minute spell in Massachusetts on Saturday night. The Lions beat the New England Revolution 2-1 behind a brace from Martín Ojeda.

The 26-year-old Argentine has scored five of his 12 MLS goals this season against New England. His match-winner in the 58th minute came three minutes after Orlando conceded the equalizer.

Ojeda said the win and the performance demonstrated how united Orlando City is in 2025. He said the Lions had played well over the last month, but the results did not always show it.

Orlando entered Saturday winless in its previous four matches. Its home loss against New York City FC on July 16 and its July 12 home draw against Montreal were both marred by the concession of goals in the last 10 minutes.

Saturday, Orlando held on for its first win since a 4-2 win over St. Louis City on June 25.

Head coach Oscar Pareja praised his players for their mentality after the recent setbacks.

“When New England tied the game, it was a tense game. They kept going. Martín scored and after that, they had control of the game. Credit for them. I see the team that we used to see in those difficult moments, guys that work hard and they find a way to get results.”

Orlando City forward Marco Pašalić and fullback Alex Freeman will compete in the MLS All-Star game on July 23. The rest of the team will recover ahead of a July 25 visit to Columbus.

Messi, Inter Miami annihilate New York Red Bulls

Lionel Messi scored two goals, assisted two others and lifted Inter Miami to a dominant 5-1 win in New Jersey on Saturday night.

The hosts scored first. Then, the floodgates opened.

Jordi Alba finished off a fantastic move with his first goal of the season in the 24th minute. Telasco Segovia added a first half brace.

Messi gave the people what they wanted with two second half goals. The Argentine maestro has produced a brace in six of his last seven MLS matches. Messi and Nashville’s Sam Surridge lead the MLS Golden Boot race with 18 goals apiece.

Inter Miami (12-4-5, 41 points) will host Cincinnati FC on July 26. Cincinnati humbled the Herons 3-0 in Ohio on July 16 to end Miami’s six-match unbeaten run in league play.
