St. Johns Bartram Trail is No. 1 team in Florida

The FHSAA kicked off the new year by releasing its boys and girls soccer rankings.

Not much has changed since the first rankings on Dec. 19 because most programs did not play over the holiday break.

That said, a familiar face is back on top of the state rankings: St. Johns Bartram Trail.

What Jen Rodriguez has done at the public school in Northwest St. Johns County is incredible. This is the third straight season that the Bears have been No. 1 in the statewide rankings at some point. (The state did not have rankings during the 2020-21 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.) In that time, the Bears have won two state championships and completed an unbeaten regular season in 2022.

This year, the Bears have played three of the teams in the current statewide top 10 and are 2-0-1 against them.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Orange Park St. Johns Country Day dropped from No. 1 to No. 2. The Spartans do not play against until Jan. 10 when they host a one-win Jacksonville Episcopal squad.

Meanwhile, Fort Lauderdale Archbishop McCarthy has moved up two places to No. 8 statewide. The Mavericks (13-0-0) are one of eight programs that are unbeaten and untied this season. Some are unsurprising, like Merritt Island Edgewood (9-0-0) that finished the 2022 regular season unbeaten, while others – like Jacksonville University Christian (9-0-0) – are surprises.
