Former University of South Florida defender Ben Sweat was one of five players selected by Inter Miami during the Nov. 19 MLS Expansion Draft.

The 28-year-old Sweat made 72 appearances for NYCFC over the last three years. He was selected in the first round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft by the Columbus Crew, but played two seasons with his hometown club, the Tampa Bay Rowdies, before making NYCFC’s roster in 2017.

“Ben is a Florida guy, played at USF, so I had seen him back then, so that was one factor for us,” said Inter Miami CF Sporting Director Paul McDonough in a statement posted on the club’s website.

Inter Miami also selected former FC Cincinnati defender Alvas Powell, Columbus Crew midfielder Luis Argudo, goalie Bryan Meredith from the Seattle Sounders as well as former Los Angeles Football Club and one-time USMNT midfielder Lee Nguyen with its other picks.
