Orange Park St. Johns Country Day is statewide No. 1

The Florida High School Athletic Association released its first girls and boys soccer rankings of the 2022-23 season on Dec. 19.

The programs leading the all-classification rankings and each of the six classifications are familiar programs. Being on top in December is no guarantee that a team will raise the trophy in DeLand in February. Just ask Neptune Beach Fletcher who finished third in its district last year, but wound up winning the Class 6A championship.

Reigning Class 2A champion Orange Park St. Johns Country Day is the No. 1 overall team in the state. The Spartans have outscored opponents 38-6 this season and feature victories over Class 4A No. 1, and statewide No. 7, Orlando Bishop Moore.

St. Johns and Bishop Moore were the only teams to start the 2021-22 season ranked No. 1 in their classification and win the state championship. The Hornets are vying for their second straight title. Meanwhile, St. Johns Country Day is looking to continue its unprecedented run and claim its 12^th consecutive state championship.
